Project descpription:
Ultrasound devices are becoming smaller and more affordable. As a result, medical specialists are increasingly using them to quickly identify problems directly at the patient’s bedside. However, performing an ultrasound is a complex skill that requires adequate training. We have therefore developed a mobile app to help medical residents improve their ultrasound skills, and are currently studying whether it leads to better performance. In a follow-up project, we will explore whether adding gamification elements to our app can further boost learning. Gamification refers to using game-like elements in a non-game setting. Gamification elements include points, achievements, or challenges. Gamification can increase motivation and may also improve learning. In our study, medical residents at two hospitals will be randomly assigned to use either the standard version of the app, or the gamified version. After six months, we will assess their ultrasound skills to see if gamification makes a difference.


About Tudor Cosma:
Dr. med. univ. Tudor Cosma is Attending Physician at the Kantonsspital Baden. Previously, he worked as resident physician in internal and family medicine in various clinics throughout Switzerland. He has substantial research experience and has previously gained a KSB Research Grant as well as an SGAIM Foundation Grant for reearch projects in ultrasound education. In addition to his doctoral degree from the University of Zürich, he is currently pursuing a masters degree in Health Professions Education at Maastricht University (Netherlands).
